In the field of pediatrics, a pediatric nurse is responsible for a number of things. A pediatric nurse must offer the proper maintenance care to a child. Depending on the specific pediatrics office or environment that they work, most accurately define the roles that they are to assume, but this is a large component of the job description. In pediatrics nursing, the nurse is responsible for the developmental screenings. Part of this aspect includes measuring the height, weight, and other preliminary measures that mark a child’s growth and development. Many nurses have the ability to make minor diagnosis during the first period of the doctor’s visit. In the field of pediatrics, nurses are often able to diagnose many of the common illnesses that a child is facing.
Nurses in pediatrics are often responsible for collecting laboratory samples. A pediatric nurse will also perform further routine tests and screenings such as checking a child’s temperature, heart rate, blood pressure levels, and respiratory rates. He or she may be responsible for conducting the more basic eye exams, as well. A pediatric nurse is also in direct contact with the parents, so they are to offer the parents the support that they need. This means that they are to offer the necessary counseling, information, and advisory needed, within means of their medical qualifications and standards. Communication is one of the key skills that have to be mastered in order to most effectively work in the field of pediatrics as a practicing nurse.
Pediatric nurses may also hold further responsibilities when it comes to laboratory work. In pediatrics nursing, a pediatric nurse may be instructed to interpret laboratory results. Those nurses that work in acute care pediatrics may also conduct in depth physical assessments of any given child. What also comes along with his or her role in acute care pediatrics is the capacity to perform therapeutic treatment for the patients.
